Join Minecraft Server from Any Version

Making a server cross compatible across multiple different versions is one of the main aspects of running a Minecraft server. This document covers how you can achieve this with ViaVersion and ViaBackwards.

Before you follow this guide, we recommend using ViaSetup to check if ViaBackwards is needed alongside ViaVersion. In some cases, ViaBackwards is required to allow an old version of Minecraft to join a Minecraft server of a newer version. ViaSetup also shows you what config changes are needed.
Note that this will only work on servers based off of Paper and its forks such as Pufferfish, Purpur and so on.

Install Necessary Plugins

1 Click on the Plugins tab of your server.
2 Search for ViaVersion and click on the Install button to install the latest available version.
3 Search for ViaBackwards and repeat the installation process.
4 (Optional) This step is only necessary if you want compatibility with older clients such as 1.7 and 1.8)

Search for ViaRewing and repeat the installation process.

Restart your Server

Restart your Minecraft server, and it will now be compatible across lots of different versions supported by ViaBackwards and ViaVersion.
