Install Critters and Companions Mod

Critters and Companions adds new animals and pets to Minecraft Java Edition. This guide explains how to install the mod and its required dependencies on an UltraServers Minecraft server.

Meet the Prerequisites

• Confirm that the server uses Minecraft Java Edition.
• Create a server backup.
• Confirm the exact Minecraft version used by the server.
• Stop the server before changing its software or installing mods.
• Confirm that Critters and Companions supports the server's Minecraft version and mod loader.
• Do not install the mod on Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Pufferfish, or another server type that does not support mods.
• Prepare to install the same Minecraft version, mod loader, mod release, and dependencies on every player's client.

Critters and Companions currently provides releases for selected Minecraft versions using Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. A release made for one loader cannot be used with another loader.

Install Compatible Server Software

Skip this section if the server already uses the correct mod loader and Minecraft version.

• Sign in to the UltraServers panel.
• Open the Minecraft server you want to manage.
• Stop the server and wait until it shows as offline.
• Open the 1 Change Version tab.
• Select 2 Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge, depending on the Critters and Companions release you intend to install.
• Select the 3 exact Minecraft version and build supported by the mod release.

• Review the installation options.
• 4 Accept the EULA if required.
• 5 Click Install to confirm the server software change.
• Wait for the installation to finish before continuing.

Install Critters and Companions

• Keep the server stopped.
• Open the 1 Minecraft Mods tab.
• Select 2 Modrinth as the provider.
• Enter 3 Critters and Companions in the search field.
• Locate the official Critters and Companions project.
• Click the project's 4 Download icon.

• Open the 1 version menu.
• Select a release that matches the server's exact Minecraft version and mod loader.
• Review the dependencies shown by the installer.
• Enable the 2 dependency option if it is available.
• Click 3 Install mod.
• Wait for the installation to finish.

Current Critters and Companions releases may require the following dependencies:

• GeckoLib
• Architectury API
• YetAnotherConfigLib
• Dependency requirements can vary between releases. Review the dependencies displayed by the installer or listed on the selected release page before starting the server.

Start and Verify the Server

• Start the server.
• Open the Console tab.
• Wait for a successful startup message similar to:

Done (...)! For help, type "help"

• Confirm that Critters and Companions and its required dependencies appear among the loaded mods.
• Check the console for missing-dependency, incompatible-version, or mod-loader errors.
• Do not attempt to join until the server has finished starting.

Configure the Client

• Install the same mod loader used by the server.
• Select the same Minecraft version used by the server.
• Install the same Critters and Companions release.
• Install every required dependency for the same Minecraft version and loader.
• Remove older or duplicate releases from the client's mods directory.
• Start Minecraft using the matching modded profile.
• Connect to the server.

Install the Mod Manually

Only use this method if the required release is unavailable through the panel's Minecraft Mods tab.

• Open the official Critters and Companions CurseForge page.
• Open the Files tab.
• Filter the files by the server's exact Minecraft version and mod loader.
• Download the matching Critters and Companions .jar file.
• Open the selected release's dependency list.
• Download each required dependency for the same Minecraft version and mod loader.
• Confirm that every downloaded file targets the same Minecraft version and loader.
• Stop the server and wait until it shows as offline.
• Open the Files tab in the UltraServers panel.
• Open the mods directory.
• Create the mods directory if it does not exist.
• Click Upload.
• Select the downloaded .jar files.
• Wait until every upload finishes.
• Confirm that each .jar file appears in the mods directory.
• Start the server.
• Open the Console tab.
• Complete the verification steps above.

Troubleshoot the Installation

Resolve a Version Mismatch

• Stop the server.
• Open the Change Version tab.
• Confirm the server's exact Minecraft version and mod loader.
• Check the filename and release page of every installed mod.
• Remove files made for a different Minecraft version or loader.
• Install the correct releases.
• Start the server and review the console.

Resolve a Missing Dependency

• Read the first relevant missing-dependency error in the console.
• Open the release page for the installed Critters and Companions file.
• Review its required dependencies.
• Install each missing dependency for the same Minecraft version and loader.
• Remove duplicate or incompatible dependency files.
• Start the server again.

Resolve a Client Connection Error

• Confirm that the client and server use the same Minecraft version.
• Confirm that the client and server use the same mod loader.
• Confirm that the client has Critters and Companions and every required dependency.
• Remove older or duplicate mod files from the client's mods directory.
• Restart the client before reconnecting.

Resolve a Startup Failure

• Read the first relevant error in the console instead of relying only on the final shutdown message.
• Confirm that every installed mod supports the same Minecraft version and loader.
• Remove duplicate Critters and Companions or dependency .jar files.
• Remove the most recently installed incompatible file.
• Start the server again.
• Restore the server backup if the server or world still does not start.
