Reset the Nether in Minecraft Java Edition
This guide explains how to reset the Nether on a Minecraft Java Edition server. Resetting the Nether permanently deletes its existing terrain and generates a new Nether when the server starts.
The Nether folder depends on the Minecraft version and, on versions before 26.1, the server software. Replace world with the value of level-name from server.properties if your main world uses another name.
Reset the Nether on Version 26.1 and Newer
Minecraft 26.1 introduced a shared dimension-storage layout. Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, and compatible forks store the default Nether at world/dimensions/minecraft/the_nether.
Open and Stop the Server
- Log in to the panel. See Access the Panel for instructions.
- Open the Servers tab and select your server.
- Create and download a backup.
- Click Stop. Never delete world files while the server is running.
- Open the Files tab.
Delete the Nether Folder
- Open
world/dimensions/minecraft. - Select the
the_netherfolder. - Click the … button, then click Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
- You can enable Permanently delete immediately if you do not need the panel's deleted-file recovery option.
Start the Server
- Click Start.
- Confirm that the server starts successfully and generates a new Nether.
Reset the Nether on Versions Before 26.1
Versions before 26.1 use different Nether paths for Vanilla and Bukkit-based server software.
Reset a Legacy Vanilla Nether
- Create and download a backup.
- Stop the server and open the Files tab.
- Open the
worldfolder. - Select the
DIM-1folder. - Click the … button, click Delete, and confirm the deletion.
- Start the server and confirm that it generates a new Nether.
Reset a Legacy Paper or Spigot Nether
Legacy Paper, Spigot, and compatible forks store the Nether separately at world_nether. The dimension data is contained in world_nether/DIM-1.
- Create and download a backup.
- Stop the server and open the Files tab.
- Select the
world_netherfolder. - Click the … button, click Delete, and confirm the deletion.
- Deleting this folder can also remove dimension-specific configuration files.
- Start the server and confirm that it generates a new Nether.
